  • *Edit*  It looks like they are bringing in video.  Coolness.

In the past six months or so, Xanga has introduced a handful of new features such as…

    Photo albums

    Footprints

    Chatboards

    Ratings

    Boost (soon to come)

Xanga has been consistently losing users to sites like Myspace and Blogger during the past two years (graph 1 , graph 2), so I think they are bringing in some welcome additions.

I’d like to see Xanga bring in video and mp3 hosting.  I also hope they will allow users the option of moving chatboards to our main blog page.  Anonymous commenting would be nice too.  I have two questioins for you.  First, what do you think of the features that Xanga has recently introduced?  Second, what additional features would you like to see introduced?

And here’s a comic I thought was funny.  Pete.

  • well some of my friends need more room for their photo’s. Also I thin kit would be cool if there was a doodle board that you can send to the owner of the site for approval (something like microsoft paint) then if they approve it it can be posted either full size/ small size for enjoyment.

  • I like the new photo album feature, and I love your photos!!! Very nice!!!

  • the only one of the above features that i’ve looked at yet is footprints.  it sounded cool so i looked but what one does with the provided information i do not know.

your suggestion, however, would be useful to me.  to have the host the same as the site of the hosted image/clip/video would be a time buster.  xanga would probably make it a premium feature anyway & then i still wouldn’t be able to use it.

  • hey whats up comment mebzck

  • Hey Pete,

I love the Footprints…I wish they had Mp3 hosting…that would be fab.

  • photoblog and footprint are my favorite additions. i wish they added free cool templates . and mp3 hosting.

  • The only thing I’ve utilized is the footprints thing and it is a blessing and a curse.
I used to enjoy visiting people I knew in college who I didn’t want to subscribe to, and didn’t necessarily want them to visit my site, but now I can’t really do that.  It is good, however, to see who is visiting my site. I never realized I had so many random but repeat visitors. I still get the random California Xanga Lockout footprint about 12 times per day, but most everyone I talk to has had the same problem, so I’m figuring it is a glitch of some sort.

  • i just haven’t been here long enough, and need to upgrade my pc so I can take advantage of what it does offer, hehe………like photos…..no way to put them on yet…….oooooo, actually I can make a cd on laptop and put it on here….hmmmmm

  • I am currently mad at xanga for their automatic renewal crap with xanga premium. i was unaware it was automatic, and there are quite a few steps to go through in order to fix it, and you seem to only find out about it after you’re billed. i think $25 a year for premium is a bit much when i can use myspace or blogspot for free. and i think i am starting to really like blogspot a lot better actually. i like the layout of it more.

  • instead of going toe-to-toe with other social networking sites adding features with different names, xanga should work on implementing unique features that will appeal to their target market. they will never be able to compete, however, with myspace’s 12+ million users and capital (read: more features). the interface / structure needs an overhaul, but even then… personal journals aren’t the fad anymore; having lots of friends is.

  • Guest commenting would be nice. I have a lot of readers that won’t register but always comment to me in person.

  • I think they should block you for doing their dirty work

  • Down with Myspace! I’m not a fan of that site. I do agree with the above suggestion of allowing guest comments. Footprints are nice, because then I can see who all has visited my site.

  • Um…to me..photoblog and footprints are nice additions: laugh :o h…i agree with the above suggestion…allowing guest comments…: laugh : Have a GOOD weekend Pete…

  • I love that cartoon! I would also love it if they were able to host MP3′s and video’s. I would also like the ability to have multiple protected lists with different names on them. I hope you have a good weekend, Pete.

  • Pete,

I love that you got Wuv’s drumstick, signed is ever better….very cool!!

  • What would we do without Xanga? I’ll never leave. Even when they take last server away, I’ll be clutching on, kicking and screaming.

  • Every week I put a cartoon off of that site in my church bulletin. My personal favorites are the Adam and Eve ones.

I don’t know if I’d be kicking and screaming if xanga went away, but it would be sad. It’s so much fun. It’s interesting that I once said I would never do it, because I didn’t want the whole world knowing about my life. Who am I kidding, I’m a total chatterbox!

  • LOVE the cartoon!

  • ryc: I have a black cat and have my entire life.  :)

  • i find it a little annoying when people just ditch xanga.  i have a myspace..but i use both.  as for features..i rarely take advantage of them.  not sure why.  but i would like video and mp3 uploads as well.  serious sweetness.

  • u have been in one? it heard that ppl got to use boat when this place was flooded about like ten years ago.

  • I think that the new features they have been adding are cool.

  • Hey Pete, ryc: I’ve pretty much been working and catching up with friends. What about you? –Tiffany

  • that cartoon is very funny.

  • Way to respond to my IM…: huh : –Tiffany

  • Actually, and I mentioned it to John before and he said it would be in development, I’d like to see an option for a Footprints Lock–giving the ability to someone to lock visitors out unless the visitor presents them with a Footprint.  This would eliminate anonymous visits for those who want to know more about their visitors.

I’d like to see a true interactive chat.  The Chatboard is misnamed–it is just a xanga tagboard.

I’d like to see a more effective ratings system.  The current hyperlink thing is practically unused and thus ineffective.  Something needs to be done to make it more prominent.

I’d like to see a Xanga store selling Xanga gear.  I’d probably not buy anything but I’d like to be able to walk up to someone on the street wearing a Xanga t-shirt and start up a conversation.

  • Anonymous posting could be a serious problem. As a user who has chosen to withhold my name, I understand how threatened people can feel when they have not the slightest idea who is commenting, especially if it becomes obvious that the commenter knows a substantial amount about those people.

  • love the cartoon : laugh :

  • i’m on aim if you wanna chat pete :)

  • I like the footprints feature. If we could send each other messages … have an inbox/email type thing … that would be cool.

    Hi Pete!

  • so…umm…do you, like, work for xanga?  cuz I could use some free premium…

  • ryc: think i’ll take you up on that :)

  • I’d like to see an autopost feature. Set it to update to public at a certain time.

  • hmm..what will boost offer?

I love footprints and video is nice. I prefer kodakgallery.com for my picture albums though.

  • that explains it!  I’m not hooked on xanga because I’m a loser…I’m hooked on xanga because PETE’S a loser and brainwashed me!  YES!  I’M COOL AGAIN!

Btw, look who got popular, mr 30-something comments.  Guess I’m not the only game in town.
