Ice Age 2?
“[Al Gore] is also a very serious guy who believes humans may have only 10 years left to save the planet from turning into a total frying pan…
Gore argues — with scientific evidence projected on big screens at his back — that global warming may soon lead to catastrophic sea level rises, which could inundate cities such as New York (flooding the former site of the World Trade Center), producing scary nonlinear runaway spasms of extreme weather (bigger, badder hurricanes and typhoons), global pandemics and, depending on where you live, torrential rains or decade-long drought. It is not a pretty picture.
‘This isn’t about box office,’ [Al Gore's filmmaker Laurie] David says. ‘None of us are going to make a dime.’ What is at stake, she says, ‘is, you know, the planet.’” Link
I would agree with Gore that we are to be good stewards of the earth, though I don’t believe humanity will ever be completely wiped out by natural causes. As Genesis 9:15 says, “I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.”
Are Al Gore’s predictions about the world becoming a “total frying pan” in 10 years correct?

that would really sux. No,i myself think we have maybe 100 years left (which is a guess)
Probably.
Not ten, but close.
I’m not even liberal and I know that.
Al Gore correct??? Not just no…HELL NO!!….
I think this world will keep cranking away….even through a nuclear war….

Your scripture is correct. I don’t think Al Gore can predict anything.
Note your scripture says kill _all_ life. Floods kill lots of people all over the world. But this scripture refers to ALL life, which is not what this quote is about. Al Gore’s predictions may be drastic, but there is a thing called a tipping point. He’s not saying that in 10 years life will cease to exist. If you’ve ever tried to move something very large, such as 700lb stone, you know that it’s nearly impossible to move it at once. But, if you get momentum (small incrementally larger movements), the rock will start to move with more and more ease, and eventually roll and continue on its own momentum. This is called the snowball effect. Small changes over time can build up lots of energy.
Another example, start a pot of water on your stove with a thermometer in it. Turn on the heat and watch the temperature rise. After a dramatic increase, it will level out and hover around 210 degrees fahrenheit. it will start to bubble a little, and remain just below a boiling temperature for a very long time, until bang… it reaches 212 degrees and starts a frenzy. At that point, you can’t stop the boiling unless you remove the heat.
Al Gore’s 10 year prediction is that after 10 years, we will no longer be able to do anything to stop it, we’ll just have to let it take its course. The world/life will not end, but things will be drastically different. Lots of species will die off, but most humans will adapt and survive.
He may be a little dramatic (it is a movie, after all), but there is cause for great concern. Driving hybrids and not littering isn’t going to solve the problem unless everyone does it together. Besides that, there are many other factors involved with global warming that require international governments to do something to unilaterally make an impact on the environment.
I don’t think we will have cars long enough to have that dramatic of a change.
i believe al gore is being realistic.
i guess i meant that it will start to take affect then. it’s kind of like aging in a way. it doesn’t happen overnight, gradually over time.
eh gore smore! you made a good point with scripture and we should take care of the earth.
I just spent the last three weeks of my life in Dr. Braaten’s post-term Ecology and Environmental Issues course. My eyes were opened to say the least. We watched a two-hour documentary by FrontLine and Nova called “What’s up With the Weather?” I would highly recommend it. I was one of the ones who didn’t actually believe that global warming was as big as an issue as it has been made out to be. But this one study showed that the earth’s overall temperature has increased the most in history since the Industrial Revolution. This was not just the earth “changing” or whatever, but can be directly corrolated to man’s endeavors of technology and affluenze. It has been projected that in our lifetime, about 40 years away, all Fossil Fuels will be depleted, even the reserves. Al Gore is unfortunately right on the money. One article I read in Time Magazine said that last year’s hurricanes that destroyed New Orleans and parts of Mississippi were because the ocean water has heated up, but only by 1 degree. One scientist said that if it were to heat up only 5 degrees higher than it is today that the effects would be cataclysmic. We live in a world with a very delicate balance.
So those of you saying that the earth will “keep cranking away” are in for a nasty surprise. American is the culprit so far, and India, China, and Russia want to join us in the 21st century as a major world economic and technological leader. If they do, the effects will only speed up. Our future generations are in trouble, but we don’t seem to be alarmed because it doesn’t affect our lives today. Don’t have children…

RYC :: God may be in control, but there are plenty of things that God has let happen that we may have thought He would have stopped. I can think of at least a few wars that completely contridict your statement. God gave Man Choice, and if Man’s Choice is to use whatever and hope that God will provide more, Chance has it that God won’t. Yes, God can create more flowers, but He relies on seeds to be present for this to happen. God created Laws, which He hasn’t broken.
As for your scripture saying that God will never wipe out mankind with natural causes, have you happen to have read Revelation? As Ben said, God has created both the Earth and Humans (as well as the rest of the universe) in a very fine, delicate balance in which things being changed a miniscul amount (1 degree of sea temperature) can cause a huge change.
Think of this as an example… The lowest the sun gets in the horizon (the least amount of solar energy with which to heat the Earth with) is on December 20th. This is called the beginning of winter. If we have the least amount of sunlight (re: heat) on that day, why is that the coldest months of the year are January and February? Same goes for summer. The summer solstice is in June, but yet July and August are the hottest months. This is directly related to the temperature of the oceans, because it is our thermostat.
Have you spent 20+ years researching the scientific, ecological, and environmental affects of greenhouse gases and it’s affect on the global temperature? I don’t think so. From what I’ve gathered with how you keep changing your post little by little is that you haven’t even watched the film you are talking about. So until you have devoted this time, money, and understanding towards the issue, I don’t think it’s fair that you dismiss his claims as “doomsday”ish or outrageous. Open your eyes and really critically look at the facts.
The Earth is changing. Don’t be ignorant.
Definitely not! He was the same guy who claim to invented the internet. hahaha
Have a good weekend, Pete!
^ :giggle: oh yeah I forgot he claimed he invented the internet! tee hee
ryc: you hope my date goes well … come on Pete stop teasing me. ha ha
maybe I should get some pointers from you eh? :spinning:
